It's a Stanford University security project that has been implemented in a website, browser extensions, and now an iPhone app -- KeyGrinder for iPhone. This US$0.99 application is from the same people at Massively Overrated who brought you the popular Typewar game.

Many of us are guilty of the same crime against computer security -- using one password across many websites. If someone manages to lift your password from one low-security website, they have a good chance of using that same password at many other sites. PwdHash uses a user-generated password, the URL of the website you're visiting, and a pseudo random function to transparently transform the user's password into a domain-specific hash of the password. If someone steals a password file from a website, they're only getting a hash for that domain -- not the user's actual password. The fact that the hash is generated for a particular domain also acts as an effective defense against phishing scams.

The same function is used across platforms, so regardless of what type of operating system you're using with PwdHash, the same user password will generate the same hash. You can use the Firefox browser extension on your Mac or PC, the PwdHash.com website on any computer, or KeyGrinder on iPhone, and your generated hash will open the proverbial gates.KeyGrinder isn't the most visually attractive app you'll ever see, but it doesn't need to be pretty. To generate your hash, you enter the address of the site you wish to visit and your user-generated password. Press the create button, and the hash code appears, ready for you to enter as a new password for a website. With KeyGrinder, you can enter a number of web addresses and create each of the hashes, then call them up later by using a standard picker to select a site and generate the hash with a single tap.

You can choose to have the app open a website as soon as the hash has been generated. The hash is automatically copied to the iPhone clipboard for pasting into the password field for your favorite site.

Be sure to check out the video at the end of this post to get an idea of how KeyGrinder works. Once you're done checking out the app, enter our giveaway for a chance to win one of ten copies of KeyGrinder. All you need to do is leave us a comment telling us how many keys you have on your keychain (real keychain, not your Mac OS X keychain).

The details of the giveaway are as follows:

Open to legal US residents of the 50 United States and the District of Columbia who are 18 and older.

On the day before Macworld last week, I got a chance to sit down with Eros Remini, VP of Marketing for OpenFeint, to talk about his social gaming network for iPhone apps. He shared with me that the network has claimed a gigantic 12 million users total, with about a million of them active in iPhone games from day to day. Additionally, the average user plays three or four games regularly -- unlike most other consoles, the iPhone is really a device that can split attention rather than have players dive deep in on one game.

He also told us about the OpenFeint app that was released last month, as well as their popular free game of the day giveaway -- once per day, they give away an OpenFeint game for free right there inside the app. And we also talked about both how OpenFeint is serving as connection between developer and customer, as well as why Apple hasn't really shown an interest in an official iTunes gaming network like this.

You can check out the whole interview on video right after clicking through the link below. Enjoy!
This is our first live video since Macworld Expo, where TUAW bloggers of all shapes, sizes, and abilities took to the airwaves to give you the scoop on every topic imaginable.

We'll be back at 5 PM ET (2 PM PT) with an hour full of fun discussion. We'll have a demo of the OWLE Bubo that was mocked by TUAW commenters, yet praised and photographed repeatedly by showgoers at Macworld Expo. I'll also demonstrate and discuss a growing toolbox of iPhone photography apps that I've been using over the last few months for my 2010 Project 365. There's always time for questions and discussion in the chat room, and we look forward to hearing what you have to say about this year's Macworld event.

We have returned! For today’s Zip-Tips, Lead Tester and owner of the world’s largest video game t-shirt collection, Jay Embry, walks us through the popular Direct Action class in MAG. If you’re the visual type we have this nifty Direct Action video narrated by Jay himself, followed by his handy tips. Enjoy!

Hello, this is Jay! The Direct Action soldier is invaluable to the team whether they’re attacking or defending. If attacking, it’s going to be your job to do as much damage as possible to key defensible points — like using your rockets to take out Defensive Emplacement Turrets. If defending, it’s the Direct Action guy’s job to keep key defense objectives up and running or out of enemy hands all together. Here are some specific tips to help you be the most effective Direct Action soldier you can be.

Basic Tips

To be Direct Action, the most obvious step is to make sure you have a heavy machine gun in your loadout.

Keep some kind of demolition gear with you at all times. Either a rocket launcher or mines will do the trick.

Always stick with your squad. Keep the Commandos covered, and revive any fallen teammates if you have the “Resuscitation” skill equipped.

Advanced Tips

Be sure to have loadouts geared for attacking and defending. If attacking, you probably won’t need a repair kit, so don’t take one. If defending make sure to have weapons that will best help you fend off attackers or stop a stolen vehicle from escaping!

Make sure to have a good variety of weapons/gear in your loadouts. Always communicate with your squadmates to make certain you aren’t leaving anything behind that could prove valuable for your attack/defense.

It’s a good idea to upgrade your machine gun as often as possible. Keep the red dot and foregrip on it to increase accuracy for most of your career.

It’s also a good idea to get the “Increased Health” skill. Extra health will keep you alive longer. And the longer you live, the more enemies you can take out with your giant man cannon.

Stay behind cover and move with your squad in waves. You’re not a one-man army and are meant to focus your demo on key objectives.

This may be strange -- in fact very strange -- but Imperial Leisure, a marketing and social media firm, has created an advertisement using an iPhone, to promote the sale of Jaffa oranges. They found that with a lot of rods and cable you can use orange power, or rather the power of 2380 Jaffa oranges, to power an iPhone. Talk about thinking outside of the box, or in this case, the crate.

VidZone, the free online music video streaming service for the PlayStation 3, has taken the European market by storm, becoming one of the most popular music video services on any platform as it rapidly expanded across 18 countries and built up a vast library of music. To learn more about the service, as well as its future, PlayStation LifeStyle interviewed Adrian Workman, the CEO of VidZone Digital Media.

PlayStation LifeStyle: Who are you, and what is your position at VidZone?

Adrian Workman: CEO of VidZone Digital Media. Set the company up in October 2001 having worked for the previous fifteen years in international music video distribution with major record labels.

PSLS: The PlayStation 3’s userbase is generally considered to consist of younger male gamers. Would you say that the VidZone demographic fits that stereotype?

AW: SCEE has just completed some research on VidZone and the average VidZone user is male and 29 years old, so we are skewing older than you’ve suggested.

PSLS: Why did you decide to provide music videos only, and not just music by itself?

AW: Our expertise is very aligned into the distribution of video rather than audio, hence the name, ‘VidZone,’ so we are playing to our strengths. We would like to become the largest music video service globally via PS3

PSLS: What is your primary income earner: adverts, or the mobile phone download service?

AW: The majority of our income is coming from standard media advertising and sponsorships.

PSLS: Over recent years, music videos have played an important role in bringing bands or artists to the attention of the public. Are music videos merely a commercial tool, or do you believe that they enhance the quality of the music?

AW: From a personal perspective, I get more pleasure from watching a music video, as it provides both a visual and aural experience. That is not to say I don’t enjoy listening to music via my iPod, but if I had a choice, I would watch a music video or go to a concert where I’d gain a richer experience of the music.

PSLS: What are your criteria for accepting music to the service?

AW: We like the music videos to be associated to an artist that has had a commercial release on a major or indie record label. We get offered a lot of unsigned artists’ music videos, but generally the production value of the video is poor and would not stand up against the large high quality catalogue of music videos on VidZone.

PSLS: What do you think attracts viewers to your service rather than television, YouTube, or Spotify?

AW: VidZone provides the user with advanced functionality, as you’d expect with the PS3, including pause, rewind, fast forward, skipping to the next video, and creating your own playlists. If you’re a U2 fan, you can watch back to back U2 videos in any order you choose on VidZone…whatever time of day or night you choose. Linear television’s days are numbered as the viewing public is getting much savvier about how they watch their video entertainment and they want to be in control rather than dictated programming schedules. I don’t think you can compare the viewing experience of a high quality music video file via VidZone on an HDTV to the user experience of watching a lower quality file on YouTube via a PC. Spotify is a great audio experience, but VidZone has the added enjoyment of the pictures too!

PSLS: How has your close relationship with Sony, one of the largest music companies in the world, made it easier for you to provide their music videos?

AW: Providing a comprehensive music video service via the PS3 has been something the entire music industry has been waiting for, not just Sony Music. We have therefore had tremendous support from over 3,000 record labels internationally in equal measure.

PSLS: VidZone features Remote Play, how popular is this function?

AW: We can see from the stats that this functionality is being used, but it is certainly not as significant as via the PS3 console.

PSLS: With 3D implementation coming to the PS3 later in the year, would you consider bringing 3D music videos to VidZone?

AW: If the music industry and their artists were supportive of the format and VidZone’s application could support it then we would consider it in tandem with SCEE.

PSLS: Could you comment on the status of the North America release of VidZone?

AW: We receive numerous emails on our blog about launching VidZone in North America and other areas such as the Middle East and Latin America. To date we have launched in 18 countries, which has been a major undertaking, and we’ll look to roll out VidZone in other geographical areas over the coming years.

PSLS: What have been the main obstacles standing in the way of North American VidZone implementation?

AW: We are a UK company based on the doorstep of Europe, so it was appropriate that we launch an ad funded service in a market we know and understand and is close geographically. We continue to evaluate other potential territory releases, but we have only been operational for seven months, and going live in 18 countries has kept us working 24-7, so we are taking this one stage at a time.

PSLS: Finally, on a lighter note, what’s your favourite music video?

AW: The Prodigy ‘Smack My Bitch Up’.

PlayStation LifeStyle would like to thank Adrian Workman and VidZone Digital Media for taking the time to hold the interview. Stay tuned to PSLS for more interviews and PlayStation news.

One of the two vulnerabilities addressed would allow a malicious PDF to make unauthorized cross-domain requests; the other could crash the PDF application and possibly allow an attacker to gain access to other parts of the system.

The first flaw is related to a Flash Player issue that was revealed last week; if you have not updated Flash to the latest version (10.0.45.2 as of this moment, see your version & current versions here) & you aren't blocking Flash, you should go get the latest build right away. Although you can configure auto-update notifications in Flash Player, it's not clear if Mac OS X clients are consistently getting these reminders to update.

Even though Mac users are far less likely to be targeted by malware than our Windows-using friends and family, vigilance is still critical. Security analysis firm ScanSafe reported that it saw the percentage of exploits delivered via PDF files rise from 56% at the beginning of 2009 all the way up to 80% in the 4th quarter, so keeping those Adobe apps current -- or, better yet, using Apple's Preview app as the default PDF reader on Mac OS X -- is only prudent.
